Mr. & Mrs. Claus: A Childless Couple

Mr. & Mrs. Claus: A Childless Couple - Blog 6 on Childless Holidays Series on Not So Mommy...

I love Santa Claus.  As a child, he visited my Grammy’s Christmas Party every year.  Often, my Daddy would barely miss Santa, having gone to work unexpectedly because the alarm went off.  I was such a believer that it never dawned on me that Santa’s eyes twinkled an awful lot like my Daddy’s.  And the fact that my Mom sometimes wore a Mrs. Claus outfit…  Well, someone had to help Santa give out the presents!

After Dane and I were married, we took over the roles of Mr. & Mrs. Claus at my Grammy’s parties.  It was harder to convince the younger generation that the real Santa was visiting.  But we still loved being able to help the jolly old couple out at their busy time of year.

As I thought about Christmas through the eyes of the childless, it dawned on me that Mr. & Mrs. Claus are an amazing example of a childless couple.  Despite the fact that they do not have any children of their own, the Clauses spread joy and love to the world’s children through their kind spirits and generosity.  In fact, some say that Mr. & Mrs. Claus do indeed have children because all the world’s kids are theirs.  What a perfect example of a childless couple!

This epiphany makes me even happier that we played the role of the Clauses for so many years.  In fact, we were Mr. & Mrs. Claus at our 10 Year Anniversary Celebration, which was seven years into our infertility battle.  I can still picture the kids gathered around to get their gifts from Santa.  And I absolutely love the portion of the video where my uncle high-fives Santa as he leaves the reception hall.  Like the real Mr. & Mrs. Claus, Dane and I are a childless couple, but are definitely not childfree.

So, when you see Santa this year, smile at your fellow childless friend.  As much as Santa loves children, I’m quite certain that he and Mrs. Claus are childless not by choice.  But this childless couple didn’t allow that to ruin the holidays for them.  No, they took matters into their own hands, deciding to give love and spread joy to all!

Santa will be visiting Maddie sometime this season…  Mrs. Claus can’t wait to give him a squeeze under the mistletoe!   (Another bright side of a childless Christmas…)

Santa and Mrs. Claus are perfect role models and shining examples of the important love and influence childless but not child free couples have on children. I love your out of the box perspective. It is spot on.❤
