Good Things: Snow

As I type, I am looking out at a snow-covered yard while wearing my “I love snowdays” sweatshirt.  Perhaps it is because I was a teacher for 17 years…  Or perhaps it is because I am childless and don’t have littles to entertain…  But I absolutely love snow.  I love it even more than my cozy bed.  So, when my hubby told me that the snow was falling yesterday, I just had to get up and take a peak out the window!

Memories from Childhood…

Snow brings back fond memories of my childhood.  Many a Spring Break, we took a family ski trip with my Uncle Tim and Aunt Dana.  And every snowday from school, my Mom and Debbie would load us kids up and head to Monterrey’s for lunch so that we could “check the road conditions.”

Memories from Adulthood…

It snowed the day after Dane and I got married, and it lasted for weeks.  On our first Christmas as husband and wife, we had to park the car at the bottom of the hill and slip our way up to my mother-in-law’s house, laughing the entire time.  The memory still makes me smile!

We celebrated our 13th anniversary in Asheville, and Maddie got to play in her first snow.  Watching her run around and explore made me giggle.  Still does…

Memories from Hosting…

And when Bruna was living with us, she got to see her very first snow when we visited Washington, DC.  It followed us back to Greenville, and she got to build her first snowman (named Benedict) and have her first snowball fight (which wore her American Dad out!)

Another favorite thing about snow…

Along with the memories, one of my favorite things about snow is the absolute gentleness of it falling, the peace that overcomes as you walk through the quiet blanket of white…  It reminds me of a song that we sang during the Christmas Cantata a few years ago, which said that Jesus came like the snow—soft and gentle and quiet, a babe in a manger…

And so, I breathe in the peace and look out at the beautiful snow, thinking about my memories, each one as unique as a snowflake.  And I smile at another good thing…

You know, hosting Bruna allowed us to experience some of those “firsts.”  If you want to learn more about hosting a foreign exchange student, check out my Host Mom Featured Article.
