My Dog Mom Thoughts on Feeding Raw Food . . .

I am a member of the closed Facebook group, Parents of Paws, which is specifically for childless not by choice pet parents.  Recently, we were discussing what we feed our fur babies–kibble, homemade cooked diet, raw food . . .

Feeding Our First Fur Baby…

Twenty-two years ago, when we brought Valentine (our first fur baby) home, we were adamant that he eat only kibble.  In fact, I remember getting upset with my Grandad for tossing Valentine a chip at a 4th of July gathering.  Fast forward to 2021 and Maddie (our third fur baby)…

Feeding Our Third Fur Baby…

After changing Maddie’s kibble several times, I decided to start preparing homemade food for our girl.  As I researched alternatives to kibble, I discovered the raw feeding community and TruDog.  Though I cook most of Maddie’s food, I supplement her veggies and proteins with some high-quality dog food—specifically Boost Me Raw Food Topper from TruDog.  (Read my Dog Mom Review of Boost Me here.)  I also give Maddie grain-free dog treats.  Both she and I love TruDog single ingredient treats.  (Read my review here.)

Why TruDog?

With the plethora of dog food choices, why did I choose TruDog?  Well, because there are benefits to feeding your dog raw food.

Before we talk about those, however, I must assert that I am not a proponent of feeding your fur baby raw meats still on the bone.  In fact, I would never give Maddie anything on the bone—cooked or not—because of choking hazards.  Also, the American Veterinary Medical Association opposes the unregulated feeding of raw foods.

That being said, I love TruDog raw food options because TruDog knows how to safely handle the raw ingredients used to make their products.  Also, they offer freeze-dried, as well as dehydrated, options.  These are quite simple to feed.  Just open the package and serve!  TruDog Boost Me has a shredded texture.  Their single ingredient treats are similar in shape and size to other “store-bought” treats I have given Maddie.  So, I am quite comfortable feeding these raw food products to our girl.

The Benefits of Feeding Raw…

As for the possible benefits of feeding your dog raw food…

Proponents of raw food diets state the following benefits for dogs:

  • More energy
  • Fewer digestive problems
  • Smaller stools
  • Shinier coat
  • Healthier skin
  • Better breath
  • Improved dental health

Just as all kibble isn’t created equal, all raw food isn’t created equal, either.  So…

The Benefits of Feeding TruDog Raw Products…

The benefits of feeding TruDog raw food products are…

  • All products are sourced and made in the USA
  • Products are easy to digest
  • They are natural and hypoallergenic
  • Contain no wheat, corn, gluten, soy, grain, fillers, antibiotics, chemical additives, or artificial flavoring/coloring
  • Contain no added sugar, salt, or hormones
  • Products are freeze-dried and/or dehydrated, so they won’t spoil quickly

Because I buy organic meats, veggies, and fruits for Maddie, it is extremely important to me that any dog food I buy is of the highest quality.  So, the fact that TruDog does not add grains, fillers, or other additives is a huge benefit to this over-protective dog mom!

Some Final Dog Mom Thoughts on Feeding Raw…

You know, the food we eat as humans has a significant effect on our over-all health.  It only makes sense that the food we feed our fur babies will affect their health, as well.  Thus, ensuring that we feed a high-quality, protein rich, balanced diet is essential.

For this dog mom, that means I cook the meats, eggs, & veggies that I feed Maddie and I give her TruDog raw food products.  That way, she gets the benefits of both a homemade cooked diet, as well as a raw food diet.  Plus, I give her a daily multi-vitamin to ensure that she is getting all needed nutrients.  (TruDog has a variety of supplements, too!)
