Childless Holidays Series: December Round-up on Not So Mommy...

Because the holidays can be difficult for the childless, I made a commitment at the end of November to help us all find joy this season.  My goal was to look at holiday traditions in a different way, with a new perspective.  With Christmas just a few days away, let’s take one more look at the Childless Holidays Series. . .

Childless Holidays

The first blog in the Childless Holidays Series. . .

With Thanksgiving ending and the Christmas season upon us, I’ve been thinking a lot about childless holidays.  For many, this time of year is very difficult.  Some want to hide away and ignore everything Christmas, feeling that they are missing out because they do not have a child to celebrate with…  But as I reflected upon the past month and look towards December, I am discovering that I really do love my childless life.  And I even love childless holidays… [Read the full blog post and watch the video…]

Finding Joy in a Childless Christmas

The second blog in the Childless Holidays Series began focusing on Christmas specifically…

For many childless, Christmas is not the most wonderful time of the year.  In fact, this season can bring much pain and sorrow, with constant reminders of what we do not have.  Because of this, many support groups for the childless give advice about how to survive a childless Christmas.  Personally, this saddens me… [Read the full blog post… and watch the video…]

Rudolph and Other Misfits

The third blog in the Childless Holidays Series looked at what many consider just for children in a whole new way…

Rudolph is a classic Christmas icon.  Everyone knows that his bright red nose helped guide Santa’s sleigh during a horrible blizzard, and the tune to his song plays often on the radio.  Each year, commercials advertise the old cartoon, which tells the tale of Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys.  While most believe that Rudolph is just for kids, I actually think he makes a nice mascot for the childless… [Read the full blog post…]

Spread Joy

The fourth blog in the Childless Holidays Series encouraged us all to find joy and spread joy this season…

Right now, I am reading the book, “Beauty Begins.”  Recently, I came across this line, “We don’t get to choose what we struggle with, but we do get to decide how to deal with those struggles.”  Isn’t that the truth?!  If given the choice, I would never have opted to be infertile and childless.  But I didn’t get to choose.  God gave those burdens to me.  Because of free will, however, I get to decide how I deal with these difficulties…  [Read the full blog post...]

17 Bright Sides of a Childless Christmas

The fifth blog in the Childless Holidays Series looked at the bright sides of being childless at Christmas…

My husband and my 17th wedding anniversary was 10 December.  On our wedding day, I never dreamed that we would be childless, celebrating Christmas without a little of our own.  But I’ve come to realize that a childless Christmas isn’t all bad.  So, in honor of our 17th anniversary, I want to share with you 17 bright sides of a childless Christmas… [Read the full blog post…]

Mr. & Mrs. Claus:  A Childless Couple

The sixth blog in the Childless Holidays Series was the favorite for not only me, but the entire Not So Mommy Community…

As I thought about Christmas through the eyes of the childless, it dawned on me that Mr. & Mrs. Claus are an amazing example of a childless couple.  Despite the fact that they do not have any children of their own, the Clauses spread joy and love to the world’s children through their kind spirits and generosity.  In fact, some say that Mr. & Mrs. Claus do indeed have children because all the world’s kids are theirs.  What a perfect example of a childless, but not childfree, couple! The Season of Family:  A Childless Woman’s Perspective

The seventh blog in the Childless Holidays Series discusses 17 different ways to be a family…

It is often said that the holiday season is the season of family.  Unfortunately, “family” is often given a very limited definition, depicted only as parents and children.  Perhaps this is why so many pose the question, “So, when are you going to start a family?” Personally, I’ve always disliked this question.  Even before my hubby and my infertility struggle, I still found it rude to suggest that we weren’t a family yet since we didn’t have kids…  [Read the full blog post…]

The Calmness of the Season

The eighth blog in the Childless Holidays Series considers the peaceful calm of a childless Christmas season…

Some may think I’m nuts to describe the holiday season as calm.  But I believe one of the bright sides of a childless Christmas is that we can choose how hectic we want life to get.  Because we do not have two-legged kid commitments, toys to search for, elves to deal with, and Santa to visit, we can fill our schedule (to the brim or just a little) with holiday traditions that bring us peace and joy… [Read the full blog post…]

Jesus was childless, too.

The ninth and final blog in the Childless Holidays Series will be posted on Christmas Day.  I find it amazing that Christmas falls on a Monday this year, which is when Good Things are published.  And the fact that Jesus is childless, too…  Well, I think that is the best thing because He truly understands our journey…

I pray you found joy…

At the beginning of this Childless Holidays Series, I said, “I have humble confidence that I can show you a fresh way to look at a childless Christmas.  A way that does not cause pain or the desire to flee.  A way that allows you to find your own special joy, celebrating your own unique holiday.”  I pray that this came to be as you read the Childless Holidays Series.  I pray that you found joy and that you are looking forward to December 25…

Merry Christmas, fabulous one!
